Managing Culture Shock: Anne has moved 11 times over the last 20 years with an average of 3 to 5 years in the same country. Anne is constantly adjusting and she makes sure her needs are getting met as well as taking care of her family and her business. Almost every expatriate has suffered from the chaos that expatriation brings to their couple, family and work. Culture shock is more than a process, it is the individual reaction to change when moving from one cultural environment to a new, unknown world. Often expatriation adjustment is overlooked and poorly prepared. Usually one person in the couple, the "trailing spouse" had to quit her job, lose friends and take care of the logistics and bureaucracy that can be quite painful in most countries. Developing resilience and adjusting well to the transitions need to be taken seriously and can be learned.
